The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle

This was a long book. This book was SO LONG. It's not even about the amount of pages but the amount of descriptions and the time it takes for the character to move on, is kind of interesting and tiring at the same time.

The book starts with a character waking up in a forest, all he remembers is the name Anna and as he's screaming it, he sees a woman running towards him escaping a man. He runs after but stumbles and falls and all he hears is a gunshot. After that, the man chasing the woman hands him a compass and tells him to walk east and thats where the story begins. A murder needs to be solved and the main character has 8 hosts (bodies??) he can use to solve the crime, if he comes up with no answer to who murdered Evelyn Hardcastle, the whole thing starts over.

The book has a fantastic concept, it's a really smart way to use all your main characters without it becoming an overpowering force of personalities that just take over each other. Each day is a new host and each day brings a new version of the very same day but since the personalities differ, it never becomes too much of one person. Except Evelyn Hardcastle, then again she suffers seven different deaths, I don't want to judge her.

I love murder mysteries, and while this one provided exactly what a murder mystery should, I was a bit disappointed. The ending was most likely perfect for the story and I actually can't think of any other way for this to end, yet it left me wanting something more. It felt as if it was too soft for the rest of the story, a bit weaker than I expected yet nevertheless an ending that left me content.

I felt kind of sad when the book ended, because although it is quite a horrifying story, when you spend that much time in Blackheath, it kind of becomes this place that you recognize. The more hosts that were used the more you could picture where everything was, what the rooms looked like and in which direction you have to go to get to a certain place. There was something quite comfortable about it.

I always like to guess throughout the book who the murderer is, and I've never been right honestly. This was one of the books where I could have never guessed which way it was going take a turn.

It's a good story, a good time-passer and worth the read, if you're into solving some crimes and you always think you know who the murderer is but it turns out you're actually wrong? This one is for you.
